Contact rules let you control who each agent can receive messages or calls from and who it can contact. Rules belong to the agent identity, so you can give different agents different permissions.

How rules work

Allow or block specific email addresses, email domains, phone numbers, or agent handles, depending on the channel. Rules can apply to incoming communication, outgoing communication, or both. Permission to receive does not automatically include permission to reply. Filter modes set the baseline policy: use whitelist mode for selective access or blacklist mode for broader access with explicit blocks. Each channel’s reference explains how rules, defaults, and any channel-specific permissions interact. Email has its own rules. SMS/MMS, voice calls, and iMessage share the same phone rules. A2A rules control communication with other agents by handle.

Manage permissions

Create and update rules in the Inkbox Console or with an admin API key. Agents cannot change their own contact rules. Contact visibility is separate from permission to communicate. Allowing communication also does not replace recipient consent or channel setup requirements.
